Things were very different for teenagers. Some popular dances were the Charleston and the Tango, but there were no discos or nightclubs. There were no cassette players, record players or CD players either. People used to listen to music on the radio.
There were orchestras instead of pop groups. Many songs were very sentimental. People listened to music on the radio, and some people had record players.
Clothes were very different too. Girls didn’t usually wear trousers, instead they wore long skirts and blouses. When they went to school, their skirts had to touch the floor! It wasn’t very respectable for a girl to show her legs!
People listened to music on the radio, record players and some people had early tape recorders. Boys wore tight, straight legged trousers. Girls wore dresses that were narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. Big concerts like we have today didn’t exist.
Some new dances were invented, like the Twist, Jive and Rock ‘n’ Roll. People listened to a wide variety of music, and to groups like the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and singers like Neil Diamond and Bob Dylan. Folk music was popular, and music was used to protest about serious issues.
The record player was the most popular way of listening to music : there were no Walkmans or Discmans.
Clothes were a bit different too. People wore flares, bell bottom trousers and embroidered waistcoats. Girls wore miniskirts. Many of the clothes were decorated with a flower pattern
Much of the music we listen to today has been copied from songs that were popular in the ´60s.
There were even more different styles of music in the 70s, such as symphonic rock, pop, rock country and disco.Groups like the Bee Gees, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones (again!) were popular.
People had a different way of dressing too. The boys wore bell bottom trousers, and shirts with big collars. Many of the clothes were made from a shiny material, and many boys had long hair. Platform shoes and hippy clothes were also popular with the boys and the girls.
Some people think that music hasn’t changed much between now and the 70’s, and that music now is a simple review of old styles and songs. But the music has changed in some ways. Now rhythms are faster and more repetetive, and the music is louder.
Many people don’t like modern music today because it is made by machines, and too electronic.
In the 80’s people listened to groups like The Police, AC/DC, Dire Straits and singers like Bruce Sprinsteen and Donna Summer. They listened to music on the radio, record player and tape recorder, and the compact disc started to become popular.
Many new sounds and styles of music became popular, like rap, hip hop, house, techno and dance.
