Carnival.
St. Paul's School, Barcelona.

In the Infant School the children were very excited all week as they watched the entrance hall slowly become transformed into the home of the Joker King "Carnestoltes".

Every day they had to remember either to wear a hat, wear odd socks, dress up as a pirate, etc, as part of the fun.

They all had a great time getting dressed up.

Look at the clown hats that they made.

Do you like them ?

On the Friday they all came dressed in their different disguises and spent the whole day obeying the Joker King's command to "have fun, don't work, just enjoy yourselves".

In the morning they had their photos taken, with the Joker King.

After play they followed him in a long procession, all the way to the gymnasium, where each one of them had a turn to show off their costume to the others.

In the afternoon we held a Carnival Ball.

Here we all are at the Carnival Ball
Jaume came and did some magic tricks
Afterwards he sang songs and played his guitar
while we danced and mimed actions.
Hurry up and come again Carnival !

Carnival

"The carnival of this year has been great. During the whole week we were instructed by the carnival committee to do different activities each day, such as:

-wearing sunglasses in the class, bringing a hat with something hanging from it, etc...

We think it will be a good idea to talk about the origin of the carnival celebration. We have to go back to lots and lots of years ago.

People, in the time of the greeks, used to celebrate this festival already. During this time of year, people could do whatever they liked to, but with masks, of course, so they couldn't be recognised. They also got dressed up in elegant, stunning clothes. It was a time of freeness and pleasure.

With the years this tradition got mixed up with the Catholic beliefs. Carnival takes place the week before lent, which means you can't eat meat, so you have to take advantage during this week.

On the last day of carnival week in school, we all got dressed up of different topics. People from Secondary 1 (1º ESO), eighth grade abd from First and Second B.U.P. participated in the competition "Best costume and theme". The winners of the best costume were Sergi Bruguer (1º ESO) and Belén Ramirez (2º BUP). The winners of the best theme were the pupils of eighth grade A class with their theme of "a chinese restaurant".

Although only some costumes were chosen, they were all very good. Everyone had a wonderful time, and we hope next year will be even better.
