| The most important festivals of respect honour the dead. People lay flowers on the graves of dearly beloved relatives. (Which in Spain are often not graves in the ground as we think of it, but graves in a sort of cement "filing cabinet" above ground, with vases fixed on the wall in front of each grave). In Spain, All Saint's Day (Todos los Santos) is a very important time, and there are special cakes sold called "panellets". Mexicans also observe November 2nd as El día de Los Muertos ("Day of the
Dead") with celebrations in cemeteries made colourful by offerings of
flowers, earthenware pots of food, toys and gifts, as well as the
burning of candles and/or incense. |
