ADVENT TRADITIONS

Christmas time is a period when people try to be better, they think more about their life,  family, relationships.... Young people usually think about their future.

12 days before Christmas Eve people, mostly single girls, celebrate Saint Lucy´s Day (13-th December). This day is very considerable for all young women and girls. If they want to know who will be their husband, they try to utilize the magic power of all nights from St. Lucy´s Day to Christmas Eve. They take 13 pieces of paper. They write there 13 names of boys, who they like. Then every evening they burn one piece of paper with one name. But they can´t see his name! The first piece of paper they burn on St. Lucy´s Day and the last on Christmas Eve. Only one piece of paper has been left. Before Christmas dinner, they can look at the piece of paper and read the name. The boy, whose name is written there, will be her husband.

Other method is connected with fruits. Young girls  immerse one apple into the water on St. Lucy´s Day. Every day from St. Lucy´s Day to Christmas Eve she drinks a drop from this water. In the night of Christmas Eve, when all people go to church, she takes that apple with her to church. After Midnight Mass, during the way home, she eats the apple. And the name of the first boy, who puts a word for her, will be the name of her husband.
