In Scotland, losing a tooth is a very exciting thing for young children. There is a legend that a fairy comes - a tooth fairy. When children lose a tooth they put it under their pillow and wait for the fairy to come. She only comes to children who are sleeping. She takes the milk tooth and exchanges it for a coin. Once she has gathered lots of teeth she builds a castle with them. Teeth, howerver, have to be clean and strong to keep her castle standing or it will fall down. Parents tell this to children to encourage them to brush their teeth.

Some primary 6 children made up poems about the Tooth Fairy while the primary 2's wrote a story about losing a tooth.

The day My Tooth Came Out

My tooth was very shaky and every morning I would give it a little wobble. I wibbled and wobbled it for ages and ages. One day, I was eating a Currly Wurly and I felt something hard in my mouth, it wasn't chocolate or caramel. So I spat it out and it was my tooth. I told my mum and she put it under my pilllow. When I wakened the next morning, the Tooth-Fairy had been. My tooth was gone and in it's place, was £1. I then went to shop and bought another Curly-Wurly!
