Ash Wednesday is to remind us how Jesus died for us on the cross . It is the first day of Lent .It is also a day of fasting and abstinence. Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights.
The ashes are made of left over palms from palm Sunday and they are burned. The Priest blesses the ashes and makes the sign of the cross on your forehead, in ash and says, "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel ."
Then for the next six weeks you have to give up some things you enjoy like crisps or chocolate as a gesture to Jesus for what he did for us .
At the end of Lent it is Easter Sunday and we celebrate with chocolate eggs .
