John Fagan was born in 1914. His mother remarried at the end ofthe war(1918) to John Glen who was a docker. There were four childrenof the marriage,Michael,Thomas,Molly and Patricia. The family livedin Anderston , near the Broomielaw where John Glen worked. They wererehoused in the slum clearance of 1926 and moved to Hamiltonhill. Asa young man John joined the thousands of unemployed,victims of theDepression.

Under 'Means Test' rules John did not qualify for the pittance ofBenefit because his stepfather was working. The situation becameintolerable and he left home. He reported at the 'Buroo'daily to'sign on' and then would go to his Aunt Bridget's home in Parkhouse.He spent most of the day reading until his cousin,James McCarron camehome from work. John and James spent a lot of time exercising withbar-bell equipment.

Eventually John got a job but was called up for Army serviceduring the '39 war.
