Festivals In New Zealand
New Zealand seems to have some festivals or event
going on some where almost everyday of the year. Sporting
events at all times are very popular, as are the multitude
of excellent agricultural shows that draw large crowds of
locals and visitors alike. Drama, ballet, and musical events
are also highly recommended. Agricultural and pastoral shows
are held throughout the year. Events include animal
handling, sheeping trials, horse jumping, local crafts, and
fruit and vegetable displays and competitions. These shows
have a distinctly local atmosphere and typical "New Zealand
feeling". following are but a few of a multitude of events
throughout the year; some large festivals are held only once
every couple of years.
Auckland
Anniversary
Auckland Anniversary Day falls on
Monday closest to January 29th and Auckland Reggata which is
the largest single-day Reggata in the world takes
place.
Auckland Anniversary Day was
established by Governor Hobson's direction, over Willoughby
Shortland's signiture, in 1842. The New Zealand Government
Gazette of January 27 , 1842, carried a notice fixing
"Saaturday, the 29th instant, being the second anniversary of
the establishment of the Colony",as a general holiday
The reason why the reggata takes place
on Anniversary day, some unknown, is that having drunk the
Queen's health under the flagpole on Bastion Point, said,
"Let's have a race."
Today, the Waitemata Habour is filled
with sailing boat of all kinds and Auckland's flock the
hills and beaches to enjoy the spectacle and
excitement.
