Auckland Anniversary

Auckland Anniversary Day falls on Monday closest to January 29th and Auckland Reggata which is the largest single-day Reggata in the world takes place.

Auckland Anniversary Day was established by Governor Hobson's direction, over Willoughby Shortland's signiture, in 1842. The New Zealand Government Gazette of January 27 , 1842, carried a notice fixing "Saaturday, the 29th instant, being the second anniversary of the establishment of the Colony",as a general holiday

The reason why the reggata takes place on Anniversary day, some unknown, is that having drunk the Queen's health under the flagpole on Bastion Point, said, "Let's have a race."

Today, the Waitemata Habour is filled with sailing boat of all kinds and Auckland's flock the hills and beaches to enjoy the spectacle and excitement.
