 Who was Saint Nicolas?

Saint Nicolas was born around the year 270 in Patras. His parents called him Nikolaos. When he got older they put the word saint in front. He was a bishop then.
He died at december 6th. But we don't know the exact year.
The people think it was 342.
We commemorate Saint Nicolas by the Sinterklaasparty. That's on the 6th of december.
Saint Nicolas was famous for
his generosity because on december the 5th orphans, old and poor people got many presents.
That's why most people still celebrate Sinterklaas on the 5th of december.

Why are we putting our shoe ?

Already in the 16 century people put their shoe at the chimney. The chimney was earlier the symbol of connection between people and god. The people believed that the gods by way of the chimney talked to them. And Saint nicolas did that too.
That's why we sing in front of the chimney so he can give him rewards.
