1 - WHAT A CREOLE GARDEN ?

or fruits can be seen.

2 - WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED ?
In a general way, creole gardens are located on hillsides or other small pieces of land
which are not used for cultures such as bananas or sugar-canes. This type of cultivation
is "natural" or "ecological" because once plowed this garden doesn't
meet any period of fallow. The farming techniques are developped according to cycles.
Farmers never resort to the use of manure or
pesticides.

3 - WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF CREOLE GARDEN ?
We do not know exactly its origin in the West Indies but we tend to think that the
first creole gardens were born on the plots of land located near the negro cabins during
slavery. After slavery, each inhabitant of the countryside kept on cultivating his creole
garden.

4 - WHAT DOES ONE FIND IN A CREOLE GARDEN ?
In the creole garden, we cultivate vegetables and other tropical fruit of the West
Indies. Thus on a same plot you can find sweet potato, dasheen, and other caribbean
cabbages. We also find some condiments necessary to the local cooking: peppers, thyme,
local onion. Some medicinal plants also grow there for example basilica, local tea, atoumo
(for all illnesses).

5 - WHICH IS THE FUTURE OF CREOLE GARDEN ?
The creole garden is disappearing because with modernization people want large
agricultural farms and neglect the traditional creole garden. Then it's up to us to perpetuate tradition so as to save the creole garden.
