Gombo is the diminutive of kingombo which indicates the plant in West Africa. It comes from India and is cultivated like food plant in all the tropical and subtropical areas of the world. It was introduced in the Antilles towards the 19 th century end. In Martinique, the popular tradition reports that it is refreshing and laxative.
