Christmas in school

Advent starts 4 weeks before Christmas. At that time in school we make all kinds of Christmas decorations. We also make some presents for our parents. We decorate our classroom and we also make Christmas cards to each other.

Last day before Christmas vaccation we celebrate "Small Christmas" at our classroom. We light up our classroom by candlelights, change small gifts and Christmas cards, eat cookies and drink soft drinks.

We also come together in the assemblyroom and watch the mystery play of the birth of the baby in Betlehem, and some other numbers.

Afterwards we dance and sing around the Christmas tree. At the end we usually get a visit from Santa Claus.

The 3 days of Christmas

In Iceland, Cristmas start on Christmas Eve Day (24th December) at 6 o'clock in the afternoon. About 5 o'clock we dress in our finest clothes and when the bells ring in the Christmas we have a delicious dinner.Many people go to church at 6 o'clock before they have dinner.

When everybody have had enough to eat, we sit around the Christmas Tree and open up our gifts. When we have opened all our gifts we play with what we get, and mom and dad relax and play with us.

Christmas Day (25th December) we relax, play with our toys, go to churc, etc. Some families come together for a Christmas party, either today or on the 26th.

26th December is the third day of Christmas. Then we, like on the 25th, play or visit someone in the family.

23th December we are very busy shopping the rest of our Christmas gifts, decorate our homes and decorate the Christmas Tree. There is a tradition in Iceland to eat a fish named skate on this day. Usually we kids don't like it.
