EUROPEAN TRADITIONS AND FESTIVALS

Carnival is a festival when we dress as clowns or whatever else. During that day, a cheerful crowd in costumes and masks takes to the streets either on foot or float or carriage; people sing, dance, joke play and turn the city into great confusion.
The most famous carnival in France is the one which takes place in Nice ( on the French Riviera): huge signs and rows of seats are put up on the main square, and all day, many artists perform in the streets and on the great square...all over the place, actually. Besides, people like you and me can also play and have a good laugh after the show.
Every year, we look forward to the day called "Shrove Tuesday" as for many centuries, we have celebrated this festive day by wearing make up and fancy dress... derisive Arlequins, Pierrots and others freely hustle pedestrains ... but as it is a fancy festival, everything is soon forgiven!

During the Carnival period, you can buy special kinds of biscuits or doughnuts from any baker's. They are called:

Bugnes

.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

Mix the flour with the eggs and the butter. Then add the sugar, the yeast and the cream. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Leave it to rest for 3 hours.
Roll out to the thickness o a penny. Cut out diamond shaped pieces and make little knots. Fry each knot in boiling oil and serve covered with sugar.
Enjoy your carnival!
