FESTIVAL JIČÍN - THE TOWN OF FAIRY TALES
We live in the middle of Europe, in the Czech Republic. The name of our town is Jičín.
Jičín is a historical town with many nice sights. There is marvellous hilly countryside
too.
Lots of famous artists have created their work there, many writers have written a lot of
stories about Jičín. Many of them have written fairy tales. They were K. J.Erben, V.
Čtvrtek, J. S. Kubín.
In 1990 the Jičín Festival was created in the town of fairy tales to celebrate the
jubilee of J. S. Kubín. Since then we have held the festival every September.
This celebration always takes 7 days - from Monday to Sunday. At the beginning of the
festival, on Monday, there is a masked procession
The mayor gives the town over into children´s hands. Since this moment the children´s
laws are accepted. Many famous people come into the town.
There are a variety of cultural programmes dramatic performances, concerts, reading
fairy tales, discos, shows, exhibitions, contests among schools, sports matches, etc.
In the main square and in the pedestrian zones there are sand pits, places with wooden cubes, merry-go-rounds, flip-flaps and variety programmes where different groups sing, dance and act. Our town is nicely decorated. Everyone laughs and helps each other. I like this atmosphere very much. At the end of the festival there are beautiful fireworks. I look forward to the next September.
